Afraid of Falling because it Might Hurt?

Afraid of falling because it might hurtFalling is part of figure skating. But what if you’re not just afraid of falling – you’re afraid of the pain that comes with it?

You’re Not Alone

You’re not weak. You’re not overreacting. This fear is real, and very common – especially after an injury or painful fall.

At Skating University, we understand that the fear of pain can be just as limiting as any physical barrier. That’s why we’ve developed specific strategies to help you overcome this common challenge. With the right guidance, every skater can rebuild confidence, regain control, and return to the ice stronger than before.

How to Begin Overcoming Your Fear

  • Protect your body = calm your brain
Wearing padding (hip shorts, knee pads, etc.) physically calms your nervous system.
    Your brain registers: “I’m safe.”
  • Visualize the fall – and your comeback
Close your eyes. Imagine falling. Then imagine standing up, brushing it off, and finishing your program with confidence.
→ This helps rewire the fear response.
  • Practice falling – on purpose
Controlled fall drills teach your body how to fall safely.
    Less fear. More control.
  • Strengthen your body to protect yourself
Strong muscles = natural armor. Core and leg strength reduce injury risk, help you save jumps mid-air, and give your brain the signal: “I can handle this.”
  • Train coordination and balance
Good coordination means fewer unexpected falls – and faster recovery if they happen. Specific off-ice and on-ice drills make your body smarter, steadier, and more confident.
  • Reframe failure as progress
Every fall is feedback. Instead of seeing it as proof of weakness, learn to see it as a step toward mastery. Skaters who fall – and get up – grow faster than those who avoid trying.
  • Talk to someone who understands
    Fear isn’t only physical – it’s emotional.
Our sports psychologist Anastasia helps skaters process past injuries and build a stronger, calmer mindset.
